HBCU women’s gymnastics continues making national impact thanks to the groundbreaking legacy created by Fisk University.
In 2022, Fisk became the first HBCU to launch a women’s collegiate gymnastics program — a historic moment that helped bring new visibility, representation, and opportunity to Black women in the sport.
Fisk gymnast Morgan Price later made history by becoming the first athlete from an HBCU to win a national collegiate gymnastics championship, helping elevate national attention surrounding HBCU gymnastics and Black excellence within the sport.
Although Fisk recently announced plans to discontinue the gymnastics program following the 2025–2026 season, the impact of the university’s trailblazing effort continues resonating throughout women’s sports and collegiate athletics.
Programs like Wilberforce University are now helping carry momentum forward as conversations surrounding visibility, opportunity, and investment in HBCU women’s athletics continue growing nationally.
With women’s sports experiencing unprecedented attention and growth, HBCU gymnastics has become far bigger than competition scores — it now represents culture, history, representation, and the future of opportunity for Black women athletes.
