Miami, Fl-- Gelan Lambert a North Miami native, will be awarded the Key to the City during a special ceremony, Thursday May 23rd at 6pm, at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). The honor is in conjunction with celebrations of Haitian Heritage Month.
Lambert who is of Haitian descent, is one of the principal cast members of the Tony Award-winning musical Fela! An accomplished dancer and singer, he graduated from the New World School of the Arts in Miami and has received the National Presidential Scholar Award from President Bill Clinton and won first place in the National Society of Arts & Letters dance competition. Lambert then went on to study at the prestigious Julliard School and has had a successful career as a world renowned performing artist.
North Miami Mayor Andre Pierre said, "Lambert is an exceptional honoree and one who exemplifies the theme for the city's month long celebration, Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Preparing the Future." He added, "as a young accomplished and influential North Miami artist, I strongly feel this is a perfect time in our city's history to recognize your efforts and great achievements in the performing arts industry."
Lambert said he was blessed in many ways to grow up in Miami's Haitian Community, "My journey from Miami Haitian roots motivated me to work hard." Volunteers with Women's Breast Health Initiative, Florida Affiliate (WBHI) in Miami Lakes, will unveil a groundbreaking new awareness campaign in the fight against both Breast Cancer & Heart Disease. The initiative called, One in Three * One in Eight, will be introduced during its annual Open The Door Reception on May 10th at the Hotel & Resort Turnberry Isle Miami in Aventura, Florida. Prize money at the French Open will rise significantly for both singles champions and players who lose in some of the early rounds.Roland Garros organizers announced earlier this month that the overall total for the tournament will go from last year's $24.6 million to $28.7 million. The winners will now receive $1.96 million compared to $1.64 million in 2012. Players eliminated in the second, third and fourth rounds will receive 25 percent more than they did last year.
