For Immediate Release

Miami Beach/February 10, 2009 – With a struggling economy, former Mayor Alex Daoud’s Tell-All book “Sins of South Beach” could give Miami’s economy a boost. Cinepro Pictures/Philippe Martinez Productions has acquired the rights to film a feature length production based on the controversial book.

Cinepro producer Philippe Martinez was in Miami Beach Friday Dec.18th at 11am for a press conference at the Fontainebleau Hotel to officially announce the movie. Production is expected to start in September of 2010 with plans to have most of the filming take place in Miami Beach creating an opportunity to employ many local residents and local actors, and will no doubt generate significant revenue for the City of Miami Beach.

Martinez, the internationally renowned producer of over 30 films including “Modigliani” starring Andy Garcia, “I Could Never be Your Woman” starring Michelle Pfeiffer and “The Flock” starring Richard Gere, acquired the rights from LionShark Entertainment, a subsidiary of BMax Holdings, which will also serve as executive producers on the project.

“In the book I was instantly struck by not only the enigmatic and contradictory nature of Mayor Daoud, but how the various story lines interconnect during such a pivotal time in one of the world’s great cities,” says Martinez. “Alex was a larger than life personality whose impact on Miami Beach is truly part of America’s history.”

Daoud, three-term mayor of Miami Beach, was a driving force behind the rebirth of the city, but ultimately served time in Federal prison for corruption. “The decadence suggested by the book’s title is what initially drew me to read ‘Sins of South Beach’,” said Ben Rizzo, principal partner of BMax, “but the depth of the story and the incredible real-life characters are the reasons that I immediately knew this would make a magnificent movie.”

Martinez says, ”Daoud tells a story chock-full of sex, drugs, violence, corruption, and murder that ultimately exploded into the transformation of the South Beach that we now know today. Much like Miami Beach itself, Daoud was a study in contrasts: the consummate public servant who routinely took drastic actions to protect and serve citizens, while simultaneously straddling the lines of propriety and legality. But, it’s also very obvious to me that there were many other individuals who were just as corrupt, if not more so, than Alex, and who reaped benefits far beyond that of Mayor Daoud. Therefore, I’m truly excited to bring this riveting story to the screen and fully develop those characters as well.”

Author Alex Daoud says, “The sacrifice, the sufferings and the sorrows of the citizens of Miami Beach during the Mariel crime wave were horrific. Now their stories will be immortalized on the big screen.”

NEW YORK TIMES SPOTLIGHTS

 'SINS OF SOUTH BEACH' AUTHOR

Miami Beach/Dec. 30, 2009 – A literary review in the New York Times focused extensively on Alex Daoud, former Miami Beach mayor and author of the controversial tell-all expose “Sins of South Beach.”

Daoud, three-term mayor of Miami Beach, was first elected to the City Commission during the days of the infamous Mariel Boatlifts. The Times quoted Daoud's description of that tumultuous era: "We ranked among the top ten cities in the nation for murder and violent crime. And South Beach's elderly residents were easy victims. The city where I was born was not the one I knew and loved. Miami Beach was a mess."

Daoud was a driving force behind the rebirth of the city, but ultimately served time in Federal prison for corruption.

The NYT buzz surrounding Daoud comes on the heels of a Dec. 18 press conference at the Fontainebleau Resort announcing that "Sins of South Beach" has been acquired for cinematic release. Mayor Daoud was joined by Philippe Martinez, producer of over 30 films, Ben Rizzo of LionShark Entertainment and former State Rep. Luis Garcia. The press conferemce was covered by WFOR CBS-4, The Miami Herald, The Miami New Times, City Debate and the CW Morning Show online, among others. Filming is slated to begin in late 2010 and some shooting will take place in Miami Beach.

“Transforming ‘Sins of South Beach’ into a movie with the caliber of a filmmaker like Philippe Martinez is the fulfillment of a life-long dream,” says Alex Daoud. “The sacrifice, the sufferings and the sorrows of the citizens of Miami Beach during the Mariel crime wave were horrific. Now their stories will be immortalized in a momentous manner on the big screen.”

Confessions of a Jewish Shiksa’ takes the stage

"The knish hits the fan when the daughter of Holocaust Survivors, raised Catholic, reveals the truth about her identity!"

Miami Beach/Jan. 15, 2010 – Stage play Confessions of a Jewish Shiksa: Dancing on Hitler’s Grave! tells the story of Frannie Sheridan, a nice Catholic girl who grew up with dumpling soup and candlesticks on Fridays, Manischevitz-spiked eggnog at Christmas, and a score of other traditions none of her Catholic friends had ever heard of. Frannie’s questioning leads her to discover the truth: her parents barely escaped the Holocaust with their lives, and decided to shroud their history in secrecy, hiding their Jewish heritage even from their children.

The strikingly original play is based on Sheridan’s real life story. The former stand-up comic leavens pathos with humor as she shows the cultural misunderstandings of her hilarious, quietly defiant mother and her father, damaged but determined to protect his family at all costs. Nosy neighbors and eccentric friends round out the cast of this one-woman show that resonates with anyone who has struggled with questions of identity, family, and truth vs. appearances.

Arthur Hiller, director of Love Story, said of Frannie, “She moved me to tears and laughter, expertly performing a range of characters from her incredible family story.”

National Public Radio praised Sheridan for “her riveting precision, her utter honesty.”

“Frannie Sheridan is a gifted artist with an important and unusual story to tell,” says Dr. William Shulman, president of the Association of Holocaust Organizations.

Frannie is also the author of plays The Waltonsteins and Never Tell, and her novel The Not-Sees: An Unauthorized Autobiography is in late development. She has been featured on national radio programs and in international press, and is available for TV, print, radio and online interviews.

Harlem Ambassadors Basketball Show A Slam Dunk With Audiences Worldwide

Fort Collins, CO -- How do you combine the athleticism of the NBA, laugh-out-loud physical comedy and a positive message that resonates with young people? Just ask the Harlem Ambassadors; they’ve been doing it since 1998.

The men and women of the Harlem Ambassadors deliver fun family entertainment and a great message to young people. Harlem Ambassador players have attained college degrees, are drug-free and promote the values of staying in school and maintaining healthy, active lifestyles.

Each Harlem Ambassadors show is hosted by a local nonprofit organization, so the event's proceeds remain in the community supporting  important local programs. Teachers, coaches, civic officials, local media personalities, former champions and other hometown heroes play on the challenging team, and many audience members, especially children,  enthusiastically participate in interactive games between quarters and at halftime.

Since 1998, Harlem Ambassadors, Inc. has partnered with hundreds of non-profit organizations in 49 states and 19 countries, including Germany, England, Iceland, Bosnia, Kosovo, Hungary, Korea, Japan, Guam, Palau, and Tahiti.  The popularity of the Ambassadors has grown to the point that, on any given night, there are two Harlem Ambassadors touring units performing in various parts of the world.  The Harlem Ambassadors are also the largest provider of entertainment to the United States military worldwide, having performed over 300 shows at more than 120 different installations representing all service branches.

Harlem Ambassadors, Inc. is not affiliated with any other “Harlem-style” basketball team, but draws on the same rich African-American tradition of combining sports with comedic entertainment that originated with Negro Leagues baseball players. Designating the team as "Harlem" was traditionally a means of letting audiences know in advance that the performers are black.

So what distinguishes the Harlem Ambassadors from other “Harlem-style” shows? The Ambassadors show features a female "show player" as the center of attention. The show player is the performer who playfully interacts with the challenging team  and audience members.  The show player also causes mischief and frustrates the referee. It's a role first created for the Ambassadors by “Ladè Majic” Prophète who continues to star in this role while also training new women show players.

Lade Majic, a Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame Candidate, has performed in more show basketball games than any woman in history, and takes great pride in leading the team as the Coach of the Ambassadors. She and all the Ambassadors women performers are an example for young female athletes to look up to. Also, because the shows are sponsored by nonprofit organizations, many Harlem Ambassadors events are held in smaller venues, allowing every audience member to be a part of the action.

The Harlem Ambassadors: high-flying dunks, hilarious comedy, and a touch of Majic. As their slogan says, “It’s Not Your Grandfather’s Basketball Show.”

SINS OF SOUTH BEACH

By Alex Daoud

Sins of South Beach sheds light on South Florida's ruling elite, the drug industry explosion and the billions made in crooked real estate deals during an era when “cocaine cowboys” slaughtered each other in drug wars and refugees from the worst jails and asylums of Cuba terrorized the population of Miami Beach. Former Mayor Alex Daoud gives an insider's view of the labor pains his city experienced during its transformation from slum to hotspot for the rich and famous.

Described by New York Times best-selling author Steven Gaines as an “astonishing exposé on Miami Beach by one of the city's most beloved mayors,” the revelations in this must-read are stunning. From illicit sex, backroom deals and police cover-ups to scheming tricksters and unlikely heroes, this real-life cautionary tale leaves nothing off the table.
